Thank You for Shopping In the USA!
An ornate original antique document dated 1883 for the Business of Retail Liquor Dealer issued by the US Internal Revenue..."Severe Penalties are imposed for neglect or refusal to place and keep this stamp conspicuously in your establishment or place of business"! This was signed by the Revenue Collector, G. Post. Please see photos!
This document has beautiful graphics on a fantastic shade of green paper! Engraved on the top center is the Greek God, Mercury, with the medical symbol (snake & staff) in hand, leaning on a large woven wicker, glass bottle, sitting next to wooden kegs, a moonshine still, along with a funnel lying on the ground!
The government used this stamp as a tax for selling, dispensing and distilling liquor to raise money to pay for the Civil War. In fine print on the side is: "Engraved & Printed at the Bureau, Engraving & Printing", " Dollars Per Year" near the bottom, and "Stamp For Special Tax" and is watermarked, USIR.
The front of the document measures 8" by 7", the coupons are folded behind, so the total length is 14". There are corner chips, nine hole punches to void, two tack holes, light edge wear and light bends, otherwise, condition is excellent...a beautiful document!
This is a FANTASTIC piece of liquor/distilling history and would be great to display in a wine cellar, pharmacy, bar, distillery, museum or office! I am happy to answer any questions, please feel free to email and thank you for your interest!
